One Sensory Bin Three Ages: 5+ Activities for Mixed Age Groups

As a nanny to three children, I always strive to maintain a peaceful and enjoyable environment. One of my favorite strategies is to create sensory bins, which cater effortlessly to all age groups. Recently, I assembled a patriotic sensory bin for the 4th of July, filled with red, white, and blue supplies. These versatile items can be repurposed for upcoming events like the Olympics or the election, making them useful year-round. Don’t feel limited by the American theme; these activities are universal and adaptable to any sensory bin, providing endless opportunities for creative and engaging play.

Why create sensory bins?

Sensory play offers numerous benefits for children’s development. It engages their senses—touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell—promoting cognitive growth, language development, and fine motor skills. Through activities like playing with sand, water, or playdough, children explore textures, temperatures, and consistencies, which enhances their understanding of the world. Sensory play also encourages problem-solving and scientific thinking as children experiment and discover cause-and-effect relationships. Additionally, it supports emotional regulation, as the tactile experience can be soothing and help manage stress. Overall, sensory play is a vital component of holistic childhood development, fostering both learning and well-being.

Some items you may want to include:

  • Large vase filler balls or pom poms
  • Beads
  • Cut up pipe cleaners
  • Ten frame
  • Plates for sorting
  • Scoops
  • Small bowls
  • Large numbers

My middle buddy, who recently turned 5, enthusiastically created patterns with the large stars. In addition to that, he showcased his creativity by crafting flags, using them for counting, and sorting colors.

This plate, discovered at a thrift store, has proven to be an invaluable tool over the years. It is frequently utilized for color sorting, counting, and practicing addition facts, making it an essential resource for our activities.

My oldest companion, nearly 7 years old, confidently utilized our large number cards and sensory bin filler to master her one-to-one correspondence and counting skills.

Our youngest darling thoroughly enjoyed scooping, pouring, and filling using a small measuring spoon.

Using a sensory bin is an excellent strategy for engaging children of varying ages. It provides a versatile and inclusive activity that caters to different developmental stages and interests. Younger children can explore textures and develop fine motor skills, while older kids can engage in more complex tasks like pattern creation, counting, and sorting. Sensory bins not only foster creativity and cognitive development but also offer a shared experience that can strengthen bonds among siblings or peers. By incorporating sensory bins into playtime, caregivers can create a dynamic and enriching environment that supports holistic growth and learning for all age groups.
