Simple Gross Motor Apple and Leaf Picking

Ahh, September! I’m so glad you’re here, even though it’s still over 100 here in Texas!

For years I’ve always followed the pattern of September Apple Month, October Pumpkin Month, and November Turkey Month. Fall is simply the best for home learning! I’ll be sharing my fall sensory bin on Friday, along with more of my apple lesson plans over the next few weeks.

Today’s activity hasn’t been used in a few years, I’m excited to take it out of retirement!

It’s quick to set up and you probably already have most of the items on hand.

You’ll Need:

  • Masking Tape
  • Plastic Apples (Or real)
  • Fake Leaves
  • Large Cleared Floor Space or Large Paper

If you have tile or wood floors simply use masking tape to make a rough tree shape on your floor. If you do not have a large clear area you can make a tree on a large sheet of paper to lay on the floor.

Make sure you have different length of branches!

Fill the branches with the apples and leaves. IMG_6041

Encourage your child to run, skip, hop, or crawl to the apples and leaves on the branches and bring them back to you or a basket.

I’ve created some movement cards for you to use. Click the link below to print.

Some other ideas include:

  • Make it a race to see who can pick the most apples or leaves in 15 seconds
  • Make your child walk on the tape lines to collect the apples and leaves.
  • Call out leaf or apple colors that your child is to grab.
  • Call out a number and collect that many leaves.
  • Write numbers or letters on leaves and apples to have your child find.
  • Sort apples by color into different baskets.

Please share @rachrunstx or @theteachingnanny if you complete this activity! I’d love to see the different ideas you have.
